About this adjustment

Scheduled or flexible rest breaks during the workday allow individuals experiencing chronic fatigue or pain to manage their symptoms and maintain productivity. These breaks help prevent overexertion, support energy conservation, and reduce the risk of symptom flare-ups.

Rest breaks may include time to lie down, stretch, or simply disengage from mentally or physically demanding tasks.

Providing dedicated rest periods can enhance focus, reduce errors, and support longer-term work sustainability for individuals living with fluctuating or persistent symptoms. These breaks can be built into the workday or taken as needed with prior agreement from employers, ensuring a supportive and adaptable workplace.

Costs and funding

There are generally no significant costs associated with implementing rest breaks. Adjustments may involve modifying the structure of work tasks or allowing flexibility in break timing, which can be supported by existing workplace policies.

Funding is typically not required, but where formal support is needed, programs like the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) or supports available through the NDIS under Improved Daily Living or Employment Support categories may be relevant.

Employers participating in Disability Employment Services (DES) or JobAccess can also receive guidance or assistance to implement appropriate rest break accommodations.
