About

Automatic doors provide hands-free access to buildings and rooms, reducing physical barriers for individuals with mobility, strength, coordination, or sensory challenges. These doors open and close automatically via sensors or push-button mechanisms, eliminating the need to grasp, pull, or push heavy doors.

This accommodation enhances workplace accessibility by supporting independence, safety, and inclusion. Automatic doors are especially important in high-traffic areas, enabling smoother navigation for people using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, or prosthetics.

They also benefit individuals who experience pain, fatigue, or limitations in upper limb function, by making entryways effortless and reducing injury risk.

Costs and Funding

Installing automatic doors can range from approximately $2,000 to $6,000 depending on the type of door, mechanism, and electrical requirements. Retrofitting existing doors may involve additional costs.

For workplaces employing individuals with disabilities, the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) may cover the cost of modifying or installing automatic doors as a reasonable adjustment. Larger premises or government buildings may also be eligible for infrastructure grants to improve accessibility. In leased buildings, property owners may sometimes share the cost under accessibility compliance obligations.
