About

Upper limb injuries include injuries to the shoulder, arm, wrist, or hand that may result from trauma, overuse, or medical conditions such as arthritis or tendonitis.

These injuries can limit a person’s ability to use one or both hands, arms, or shoulders, affecting daily tasks such as dressing, eating, or working.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Difficulty performing manual tasks or repetitive movements.
  • Inability to lift, carry, or handle objects.
  • Limited ability to use computer or hand tools.
  • Reduced mobility or dexterity in the hands or arms.
  • Pain or fatigue from prolonged use of the affected limb(s).
  • Risk of further injury or strain with specific tasks.
  • Dependence on assistance for certain job duties.
  • Decreased overall productivity or output at work.

Practitioner Help

  • Conduct an assessment to understand the extent of the injury and limitations.
  • Recommend job modifications or task adjustments to reduce strain.
  • Help identify roles that align with the person's abilities (e.g., desk-based work or tasks requiring less physical exertion).
  • Provide training on adaptive devices or assistive technology for improved functionality.
  • Offer advice on ergonomics and workplace safety to avoid re-injury.
  • Guide the participant on how to communicate their needs with employers.
  • Work with employers to implement reasonable accommodations for the participant’s needs.

Common Accommodations

  • Special computer equipment (voice recognition software, adaptive keyboards)
  • Job restructuring or redistributing tasks
  • Use of assistive devices (e.g., modified tools, splints, or braces)
  • Assistance with lifting, carrying, or other physically demanding tasks

Notes

Recovery from upper limb injuries varies depending on the type and severity of the injury.

Psychological support might be needed if the injury causes long-term disability or emotional strain.

Early intervention and rehabilitation are key to improving functional outcomes.
