About

Spina Bifida is a congenital condition where the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. It can cause physical and neurological challenges, depending on the type and severity. People with Spina Bifida may have mobility limitations, bladder or bowel issues, and require use of mobility aids or assistive technology.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Difficulty with physical access (e.g. stairs, uneven surfaces)
  • Limited mobility or use of a wheelchair
  • Fatigue due to physical effort or secondary conditions
  • Challenges with bladder or bowel control during work hours
  • Possible learning or processing difficulties (in some cases)
  • Need for frequent breaks or access to accessible facilities

Practitioner Help

  • Assist with identifying suitable, accessible work environments
  • Support with job matching that minimises physical strain

  • Adjustable workstations to reduce strain
  • Access to assistive devices (mobility aids, assistive technology)
  • Allowing more breaks to manage anxiety or fatigue
  • Adjustments in workload to reduce stress
  • Work adjustments to minimize physical strain
