About

POTS is a condition that affects circulation (blood flow). It causes an abnormal increase in heart rate when a person stands up, which can lead to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, nausea, and sometimes fainting. It is a type of dysautonomia, meaning the automatic functions of the body (like blood pressure and heart rate regulation) are not working properly.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Fatigue and reduced stamina
  • Dizziness or fainting when standing for long periods
  • Difficulty with concentration ("brain fog")
  • Heat intolerance or sensitivity to temperature changes
  • Fluctuating symptoms, especially after exertion
  • Needing to sit or lie down frequently

Practitioner Help

  • Help identify suitable roles that minimise standing or high physical demand
  • Support pacing strategies and energy management techniques
  • Assist with planning for consistent hydration and rest
  • Provide information on how to communicate access needs at work
  • Offer emotional support to manage anxiety or stigma

Common Accommodations

  • Flexible working hours or part-time work
  • Ability to work from a seated position
  • Allowing breaks to rest or recalibrate balance
  • Adjustments in workload to reduce stress

Notes

POTS can vary from mild to disabling, and the impact on work can depend on how well symptoms are managed. With adjustments and support, many people with POTS can remain in or return to work successfully.
