About

Polio is a viral infection that can affect the nervous system and lead to muscle weakness or paralysis. While polio is now rare due to vaccination, some survivors experience new or worsening symptoms decades later, known as Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS). Symptoms may include fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and reduced mobility.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Muscle weakness or fatigue affecting stamina
  • Difficulty standing, walking, or lifting
  • Need for mobility aids (wheelchair, brace, cane)
  • Chronic pain or joint problems
  • Sensitivity to temperature or overuse of muscles
  • Fluctuating symptoms that affect consistency

Practitioner Help

  • Help identify physical limitations and match roles to abilities
  • Support energy conservation and pacing strategies
  • Recommend adaptive equipment and assistive technologies
  • Help advocate for workplace modifications
  • Encourage open communication with employers about needs

Common Accommodations

  • Reduced manual handling
  • Regular breaks for stretching and movement

Notes

People living with Post-Polio Syndrome may not show visible signs of disability. Symptoms can vary in severity and impact, so ongoing support and workplace flexibility are important.
