About

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and fragile, making them more likely to break. It often affects older adults and can happen without any symptoms until a bone breaks.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Increased risk of bone fractures from falls or accidents.
  • Limited mobility due to pain or fear of injury.
  • Difficulty lifting or carrying heavy objects.
  • Struggles with balance and stability.
  • Need to avoid physical activities that increase the risk of injury.
  • Fatigue from managing pain or fear of fractures.

Practitioner Help

  • Educate about bone health and fall prevention.
  • Suggest exercises to strengthen bones and improve balance.
  • Help create a plan for pacing work tasks to avoid overexertion.
  • Provide strategies to manage pain and prevent injury.
  • Recommend assistive devices or tools for safety.

Common Accommodations

  • Adjustable workstations to reduce strain
  • Ergonomic tools and supports for posture
  • Flexible working hours or part-time work
  • Allowing more breaks to manage anxiety or fatigue
  • Modified job duties to accommodate physical limitations
  • Organise an occupational therapist to attend the workplace and make recommendations on equipment.
  • Appointments with an occupational therapist to consider simple stretches, modifications, or movements that could support activity at work.

Notes

Osteoporosis is often a gradual condition, so monitoring bone health and adjusting accommodations over time is important.
