About

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a group of genetic disorders that cause muscles to weaken over time. This leads to difficulty in moving, walking, breathing, and performing daily tasks.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Difficulty with walking or standing for long periods.
  • Muscle weakness or loss of strength.
  • Fatigue or tiredness.
  • Need for mobility aids (wheelchair, walker).
  • Limited dexterity or fine motor control.
  • Frequent medical appointments or health management.
  • Difficulty lifting objects or performing physical tasks.

Practitioner Help

  • Assess skills, strengths, and job preferences.
  • Suggest suitable job roles that match abilities.
  • Provide career counselling and guidance.
  • Assist with job search and application process.
  • Support the participant in negotiating accommodations with employers.

Notes

Muscular Dystrophy varies in severity, and its impact on work ability depends on the specific type and progression of the disease. With the right support and accommodations, individuals with MD can lead fulfilling careers.

Awareness days are set for two kinds of MD: Duchenne and limb-girdle.

Sept. 7 is World Duchenne Awareness Day,

Sept. 30 is Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day.
