About

A herniated disc occurs when one of the discs in the spine slips out of place or ruptures, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, neck, arms, or legs.

It is often caused by wear and tear or injury.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Difficulty sitting or standing for long periods.
  • Pain while lifting or bending.
  • Limited mobility or flexibility.
  • Difficulty with certain physical tasks (e.g., heavy lifting, bending, or twisting).
  • Increased fatigue.
  • Possible absenteeism due to flare-ups of pain.

Practitioner Help

  • Assess the individual’s physical abilities and limitations.
  • Recommend suitable job roles with less physical strain.
  • Work with the individual to improve posture and ergonomics in the workplace.
  • Suggest exercises or physical therapy to reduce pain and improve strength.
  • Help with workplace adjustments or accommodations for comfort and safety.
  • Provide education on managing the condition during work.

Common Accommodations

  • Regular breaks for stretching and movement
  • Lifting aids or assistance for heavy items
  • Work adjustments to minimize physical strain
