About

Chronic sinusitis is a long-term inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for 12 weeks or longer, even with treatment. It can cause nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headaches, a sore throat, fatigue, and a reduced sense of smell or taste.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Fatigue due to poor sleep or chronic discomfort
  • Headaches or facial pain interfering with focus
  • Reduced concentration due to sinus pressure or brain fog
  • Difficulty working in environments with dust, chemicals, or strong smells
  • Needing time off for medical appointments or flare-ups

Practitioner Help

  • Help identify triggers and manage exposure in the workplace
  • Support the participant in developing routines for symptom management
  • Recommend pacing strategies to manage fatigue
  • Assist with employer communication around flexibility or environmental needs
  • Encourage self-advocacy for accommodations

Common Accommodations

  • Providing an air purifier or adjusting workplace ventilation
  • Minimising exposure to allergens or irritants (e.g., perfumes, dust)
  • Flexible working hours or part-time work
  • Allowing breaks to rest or recalibrate balance
