About

COPD is a long-term lung condition that makes it hard to breathe. It includes diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. People with COPD may have shortness of breath, persistent coughing, wheezing, and low energy, especially during physical activity.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Shortness of breath during tasks that require exertion
  • Fatigue and reduced stamina throughout the day
  • Difficulty working in dusty, smoky, or poorly ventilated areas
  • Trouble with temperature extremes or air pollution
  • Increased need for rest or slower pace
  • Occasional absences due to flare-ups or medical appointments

Practitioner Help

  • Identify low-exertion roles or tasks with minimal physical demand
  • Support planning for regular breaks and energy pacing
  • Encourage roles in clean-air environments
  • Liaise with employers to make reasonable adjustments
  • Assist with transport options if walking long distances is difficult
  • Encourage access to pulmonary rehabilitation if recommended

Common Accommodations

  • Improved workplace ventilation and air filtration
  • Adjustments in workload to reduce stress
  • Assistance with transportation or parking

Notes

COPD symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Many people can continue working with the right support and pacing strategies. A clean air environment and managing energy levels are key to maintaining work ability.

November is COPD Awareness Month
