About

Anxiety disorders cause excessive feelings of intense fear or worry. This can affect daily life and work.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): Ongoing, excessive worry about many things.
  • Panic disorder: Sudden episodes of intense fear, often accompanied by physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat.
  • Social anxiety disorder: Fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations.

This condition is often invisible.

Many disabilities, including this one, may not have outward signs—people can be significantly impacted even if they appear “fine” on the outside.

Common Challenges

  • Difficulty concentrating or focusing on tasks.
  • Fear of making mistakes or being judged by coworkers.
  • Panic attacks during stressful work situations.
  • Avoidance of meetings, presentations, or social interactions.
  • Low self-esteem or lack of confidence.
  • Taking frequent sick days due to anxiety.

Practitioner Help

  • Encourage the participant to speak to a GP for a mental health care plan.
  • Ensure the participant is engaging in all aspects of their mental health care plan.
  • Suggest therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
  • Let them know of local support groups.
  • Teach coping skills and relaxation techniques.
  • Help identify triggers and develop strategies to manage anxiety.
  • Offer support and encouragement to build confidence.
  • If medications are part of their mental health care plan, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications, make sure the participant is taking medications as prescribed.

Common Accommodations

  • Flexible working hours or part-time work
  • Adjustments in workload to reduce stress
  • Quiet work environment or noise-cancelling headphones
  • Support for attending meetings or social events (e.g., offering virtual participation or smaller group settings)
  • Regular check-ins with a manager or supervisor
