About

Amputation is the loss of a limb or body part due to injury, disease, or surgical removal. It can affect one or more limbs and may be partial or complete. People with amputations may use prosthetic devices or mobility aids to support daily activities.

Common Challenges

  • Limited mobility or dexterity, depending on the limb affected
  • Fatigue or pain from using prosthetics
  • Difficulty with tasks requiring manual handling or fine motor skills
  • Need for frequent rest breaks or altered pacing
  • Accessibility issues in the workplace environment
  • Emotional or psychological adjustment following limb loss

Practitioner Help

  • Identify roles that match the person's current strengths and mobility
  • Suggest workplace modifications or tools to improve access and comfort
  • Provide support for building confidence and adjusting to the workplace
  • Connect the participant with occupational therapy or prosthetics services
  • Advocate for gradual return-to-work plans if recovering from recent amputation

Common Accommodations

  • Accessible entryways, lifts, and ramps
  • Modified workstations for seated or one-handed work
  • Access to assistive devices (mobility aids, assistive technology)
  • Flexible work hours or breaks to manage medication schedules
  • Allowing time for prosthetics fittings or physical rehabilitation
